INT. TEACHER’S LOUNGE, VAN NUYS HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

Robert is finishing up his PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH in the teacher's lounge, staring occasionally at Gerrie, the teacher from Hawaii.

Gerrie is in a conversation with CLAUDE, 60’s, the Jewish art teacher with missing teeth, NUMBERS TATOO on his left forearm.

CLAUDE
Well, his style is like Gaughin.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
The French artist who went to Tahiti to paint?

CLAUDE
Yes, except he paints the things he’s seen. I think he’s seen these things... gang shootings...

GERRIE MIYASHITA
Drive-bys?

CLAUDE
Extremely detailed, like a photograph... Funerals of friends...

GERRIE MIYASHITA
Sounds morbid...

CLAUDE
That’s the life of these Students . He’s so talented.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
What’s you gonna do for him?

CLAUDE
He won’t fill out the scholarship forms.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
You mean.... Oh... him. Didn’t anyone tell you he can’t read?

CLAUDE
How the heck did he become a senior?

Gerrie shrugs her shoulders.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
Give me the forms and I’ll fill them out with him.

ROBERT “SENIOR”
I can tutor him in reading...

GERRIE MIYASHITA
When? After school? I thought you had a boy here? What about him?

ROBERT “SENIOR”
Oh, Bobby can take care of himself.

Gerrie and Claude head for the door. Gerrie nods towards the COAT ROOM where there are LOCKERS.

INT. COAT ROOM / LOCKER ROOM, TEACHER’S LOUNGE, VAN NUYS
HIGH SCHOOL, CALIFORNIA - DAY

Claude has an expression, “What?” on his face.

Gerrie whispers...

GERRIE MIYASHITA
Claude. I went to the exhibit at Longhi’s Art Emporium in Beverly Hills last week.

CLAUDE
I thought I saw you there. Why didn’t you say hello?

GERRIE MIYASHITA
Your paintings sell for in the six figures. What’re you doing here teaching school?

CLAUDE
I don’t paint anymore. Thought I could get inspiration from the kids.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
But they throw spitballs in the class. Why don’t you tell them... how much you make.

CLAUDE
Why?

GERRIE MIYASHITA
To inspire them to become great painters like you.

CLAUDE
They don’t have my experiences. They haven’t been through what I’ve been through.

Claude looks at the NUMBERS TATOED on his left forearm.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
They have Their experiences. You have yours. Give them hope there’s money to be
made in art.

CLAUDE
It’s a false hope. Less than one out of a hundred will make it in the art world - most go into commercial art. Few end up in fine art like me.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
How about an interview for the school newspaper?

CLAUDE
I’ll think about it.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
Don’t think too long....

CLAUDE
I’ll think about it...memories you know.

GERRIE MIYASHITA
Yes, memories. My dad and mother...were in California on a trip when...

CLAUDE
I’m sorry. Did they end up in the camps here?

GERRIE MIYASHITA
I’d rather not talk about it.

CLAUDE
Coffee sometime?

GERRIE MIYASHITA
Tea...
