EXT. SCHOOL YARD, VAN NUYS HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

Bobby’s shirt is off and being used as “catch” between the BLACKS and HISPANICS.

BOBBY
Stop! Stop!

Bobby’s face is streaked with dirt and tears. His tan is fading. Dimon strides up with her WALKING STAFF, and starts waving it like she knows martial arts....

The BLACKS and HISPANICS drop Bobby’s Aloha Shirt which is MUDDIED. Dimon lifts the shirt with the end of her STAFF and offers it to Bobby, who puts it on. There’s a TEAR in the shoulder...

BOBBY (CONT’D)
My dad’ll kill me.

DIMON
Get another shirt!

BOBBY
You don’t understand. It’s a matching shirt.

Dimon starts to GIGGLE.

DIMON
I have a sewing machine.... After school?

BOBBY
Yeah... okay. Thanks.

INT. TEACHER’S LOUNGE, VAN NUYS HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

Bobby goes by the Teacher's Lounge, with this TORN ALOHA SHIRT, looks in, and sees his Dad Robert talking to Gerrie Miyashita, the teacher from Hawaii, and goes by, being invisible.

EXT. TREES, VAN NUYS HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

Bobby goes outside, walks to the stand of tall trees where there is nobody. Dimon dressed black comes up, wielding her STAFF, playfully jabbing it at Bobby.

DIMON GOLD
That's my tree.

BOBBY
Teach me how to do that?

DIMON GOLD
You can get a doctor’s excuse to bring one to school?

BOBBY
Why not? I have a bad back. Bobby fakes a bad back and HOBBLES around, getting a
smile from Dimon.

DIMON GOLD
Come on...

EXT. “JUNK YARD TREASURES,” SUNLAND, CALIFORNIA - DAY
JUNK YARD in SUNLAND, California.

It looks like JUNKED CARS from accidents, ARCHITECTURAL PARTS of buildings.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS go ON with a TIMER, and TWINKLE. It looks nice at night.

INT. “JUNK YARD TREASURES,” SUNLAND, CALIFORNIA - DAY

Inside the WAREHOUSE, it’s JUNK and FURNITURE piled high. The warehouse is RUSTING, and holes in the ceiling.

INT. OLD DRYER, JUNK YARD TREASURES - NIGHT

Dimon WASHES the ALOHA SHIRT in the sink, rubbing it on an old-fashioned SCRUBBING BOARD. She wrings the SHIRT dry and dumps the WASHED Aloha Shirt
into the DRYER. Turns it on. Goes outside...

EXT. “JUNK YARD TREASURES” - NIGHT

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TWINKLE in the front of the building, like lacy bright spiderwebs.

The SKY is an intense ULTRAMARINE BLUE...

Dimon takes a CIGARETTE out of her SMALL SILVER POCKETBOOK. She starts to light up with a STERLING ZIPPO LIGHTER, that must be WWII era.

Bobby looks at her, shakes his head.

BOBBY
You’re clogging your lungs.

Dimon puts the CIGARETTE back into the pack, puts away the lighter.

BOBBY (CONT’D)
Where’s your parents?

DIMON GOLD
Dad died and Mom’s in the institution. I inherited the business and the lighter.

BOBBY
I thought for that field trip you got your mother’s signature.

Dimon signs in the air....

DIMON GOLD
Rosie Gold.....

BOBBY
The doctor’s excuse?

DIMON GOLD
We have multiple phone lines...

BOBBY
You forged.....?

Dimon just smiles. Bobby gets it.

AN ANTIQUE SEARS TREADLE SEWING MACHINE that uses no
electricity.

Dimon is peddling away, carefully sewing Bobby’s ALOHA

SHIRT SLEEVE to the shirt. She holds it up.

BOBBY (CONT’D)
Almost as good as new.

DIMON GOLD
You owe me a dinner.

BOBBY
I’ll cook.

DIMON GOLD
A man who cooks.... Love it!
Bobby is pleased...

EXT. “JUNK YARD TREASURES” - NIGHT
Bobby and Dimon finishing dinner. The CHRISTMAS LIGHTS twinkle....

DIMON
The taxes are enough to kill us...

Business slow after the rainy season... Bobby thinks she's kidding but she's not. Dimon laughs. She and Bobby become friends.
